Description
1930 4½d violet Die II, wmk 7, perf 13½x12½ (prepared for use but only officially issued with 'FIVE PENCE' surcharge), AN UPPER LEFT CORNER BLOCK OF FOUR, very fine unmounted o.g. (hinged in top margin only). An extraordinary showpiece, being the only mint block known to exist in private hands, with impeccable provenance. From the collection of current Australian stamps, all in matching upper left corner blocks of 4, presented in 1934 by the then Postmaster-General, Senator A.J. McLachlan, to the H.R.H. The Duke of Gloucester, who passed it to his sister, Princess Mary, Countess of Harewood (1897-1965) and subsequently sold from the estate of her son, the 7th Earl of Harewood.
