1917 (JA 11) censored cover to Egypt, franked by 1912-16 ½d and 1d, and 1916 War Tax 1d+1d, cancelled by individual strikes of code ‘C’ despatch cds with very fine triangular ‘PASSED BY CENSOR / No 3147’ cachet in magenta, with Alexandria arrival (15 Feb) backstamp. Minor toning still a fine and very scarce usage. [Capt. William Raphael Gatt, one of just four Maltese servicemen to be awarded the M.C., had transferred to the Royal Field Artillery after service in the Gallipoli Campagn in the Royal Malta Artillery. In 1920 he was appointed Commandant, Prisoners of War Camps, Malta by the War Office. He later rose to the rank of Major and was awarded the M.B.E. while serving as Adjutant to the Governor.]
