Description
1908 OHMS registered cover to Darlington, England with "2½ D" surcharge on 4p brown and blue KEVII, cancelled on its first day of issue. Originally franked with ½p KEVII green block of four and 1d KEVII carmine single, both tied by Georgetown cds (10 FE 1908). Two days later a "2½ D" on 4p brown and blue stamp was applied and tied by a similar Georgetown cds (12 FE 1908), the first day of issue, a small note by the postmistress at left states "just surcharged 2½ on 4". Routed through Cienfuegos and Havana, Cuba, (markings on reverse) and with Darlington oval receiving cancel (29 FE 1908), small filing pinholes on the top left of the cover, very fine example of the scarcest provisional surcharge on cover, of which only four are believed to exist, ex-Watkin, Meredith, Maisel, BPA cert (1996), an exceptional item on many levels
