Footnote
Ex. Lockdales, Auction on September 12th, 2020, lot 146. Believed to have been struck c. 1870s from the “inferior workmanship” dies, with an earlier date used to give the impression of a coin worn down from circulation. The good silver content was suggested by Lockdales to have been as a result of laundering stolen silverwear, which had been melted down.
