Description
1942-51 mint collection with Kathiri (79) and Shihr (109), on leaves, mainly a study of the definitive shades. Kathiri with 1942 set (3; one unmounted, one toned) and the bogus '5' surcharge on the 1r; new currency with three sets (two unmounted, one toned). Shihr 1942 sets (4; two unmounted) and extras including ½a shade x 2, one unmounted, currency change with four sets, all unmounted, save for the 10c which has two unmounted and one hinged.
Footnote
The bogus surcharge on the Kathiri 1r took place after the ship containing the consignment of the 5r was lost at sea. A replacement consignment was sent but was not put on sale until 1st October. In the meantime, enterprising Bombay merchants surcharged quantities of the 1r and sold them to unsuspecting troops at 6r a time!
