1902 2 x 2½d ultramarine on mourning cover to Germany just tied by London cds for 'JA 1/02', the first day of issue, cachet in violet of the Lord Chamberlain Windsor Castle above, with 'OFFICIAL PAID WINDSOR/ DE 31/01' in red alongside. The stationery is of 'The Surveyor of the King's Pictures and Works of Art' with a manuscript explanation on reverse that the letter was from the Earl of Pembroke. Slight soiling and opening faults, still most unusual. SG 230
