1881 (June) 8c on 12c carmine, type 5 surcharge, ERROR SURCHARGE INVERTED (with wmk inverted and reversed as always), upper left corner marginal, being pos. 1 on the sheet with the inverted surcharge from pos. 10 of the corrected first setting, brilliant o.g. (stamp unmounted) with the wmk clear in the margins from the face. A spectacular and wonderful stamp, absolutely superb and of the highest rarity, being one of just eight in private hands from the original Ferrary sheet of 10; the vertical pair from the right of the sheet (pos. 5/10) is in the Royal Collection. Ex Lahner (Spink 12 March 1997, lot 327) and Danson (Robson Lowe 30 June 1971, lot 2081).
