1911 FIRST U.K. AERIAL POST: Violet privilege card sent 9 September 1911 from London, the first day of operation, signed and dated by pilot Clement Gresswell who in the note on reverse, indicates that he expected to pilot the first flight himself, (it had been intended that Gresswell, the senior pilot, should carry the first bag containing the special privileged mail, however the wind was too strong for Gresswell’s Farman biplane and Hamel made the first flight instead in his Bleriot monoplane).
