Description
1948 (Oct.) 2/- black and brown perf 13 bottom two rows of sheet with CP 1 (doubled) under R10/2, imprint and FP 1, unmounted o.g. Folded, and with quite heavy natural gum bends affecting the lower row. R9/3 shows the 'bird on memorial' plate flaw scratched out on the stamp itself, using a sharp instrument. SG 128b, ba var.
XXX Italics please - This sheet would likely have been from the Crown Agents' stock. De La Rue were highly sensitive about stamps with printing faults being distributed to dealers, in case of publicity. Instances of varieties being scratched out on individual stamps at this time are far from unknown, but this is the first instance we can recall of such attention being paid to this particular plate flaw XXX
