Description
1889 Hand illustrated. Superb cover painted by George H Edwards the Victorian watercolourist who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1896-1900 and the Royal Institute. The scene depicts a Canoeist passing a Bouy with the 1d lilac (SG 172) as part of the flag, the 1/2d vermilion (SG 197, minor faults at right due to being folded around the envelope) placed at the top left of the cover clear of the painting, whilst the address is inscribed on a passing piece of jetsam, each stamp neatly tied by a London cds for JU.18.1889. backstamped by a Weston-Super-Mare arrival cds for the following day. Sent to his Brother for his birthday (June 20th) several other examples exist for subsequent years. SG172/197.
