1856 (26 Aug) entire letter datelined 'Penang, 26th August 1856' to Mauritius, endorsed at upper right "per Lord Raglan", bearing uncancelled India 1a Die I, ('B' Stone, pos.47). The letter details financial transactions of '300 Bags of Rice' and '40 Cases of Hoegs Lard', the latter of which was carried aboard the "Lord Raglan", sender writing "regarding its disposal we leave it entirely to your good selves". On arrival at 'Richardson Johnstone co' Mauritius the letter was annotated 'M Shircoe/ Singapore/ 26 May' and filed, and was recently discovered folded (with stamp hidden!) in a family archive in Canada where it has been for over a century, never before appearing on the open market. [N.B. From the records available, the 'Lord Raglan' appears to be on the homeward leg of a voyage to Port Adelaide which carried 286 emigrants to Australia. The Adelaide Times announced this ship as a Projected Departure to "Singapore and Shanghai" in February, where the Straits Times announcing its safe arrival to the Malayan peninsula on May 6.]
