Description
1896 cover addressed to Stutterheim, Cape bearing
½d (4, two pairs) tied by 'DARKTON 12 AUG 96' cds, the reverse with Pretoria transit and 'Stutterheim 18 AUG 96' arrival cds. On 6 September 1895 the letter rate to the ZAR was reduced to 1d per ½ oz. It would appear as though the sender, Grosvenor Darke (the founder of Darkton) initially put a pair of ½d's on to pay what he thought was the 1d rate, but postage to other neighbouring states was still 2d and so an additional pair of ½d's was affixed and cancelled later that day. A very fine and scarce cover
