Description
G.B. used in. 1854-7 1d red-brown, Die II, used with barred '124' numeral of Aden, stamp with small faults but a very fine strike of the cancel. This shows thick bars at top and the sides, with numerous thin lines below, apparently the discovery example of this cancel. Ex 'Sapphire Holding' (Spink Shreves, 23.10.10). SG Z5 var
Telegrams for Aden were forwarded from Suez (the limit of their reach at this time) by ordinary mail. The envelope containing the telegrams would bear British stamps for the reply, so this is likely the source of such cancellations on G.B. stamps
