1877 cover to France bearing 1874 1d lilac bisected vertically, paired with normal 1d.lilac and 1s. dull magenta making up the 1s.½d rate to France via UK. being 1d, for inland postage. Front bearing 1/0½d. in red manuscript denoting fee for the packet and London PAID receiving mark dated 17 MR 77, slight peripheral wear to cover nevertheless  a fine and scarce item, The Tapling Collection held in the British Museum holds the other known example of this bisect on cover. SG 1,1a & 3.  
 
Also included with this lot is a defective cover dated 1877 bearing 1d. lilac (2), 1s dull magenta and 1/0½d in red manuscript over paying the rate to France.
