Description
1897 envelope to Monrovia, Liberia from Verneuille sur Avre to the French consul in Monrovia, endorsed “United States of Liberia/ via Liverpool”, franked 25c tied by cds, reverse with London cds and two segmented circular ‘L’ date stamps, Monrovia arrival of 15 SE. It would appear that the Consul found that the letter had to be handled by the Foreign Ministry in Paris, and wrote this return address across the front of the envelope in lilac. The cover was sent to Grand Bassam, Ivory Coast to catch the Loango to Marseille steamer with Paqr. No.5 cds. A small toned spot below stamp not unduly detracting, a journey of about 14,000 km ending up 100km from where originally posted.
