E. Whicker, the soldier sending the letter, backstamped 'FPO 13' (5 Sep) & 'SABATHU' arrival (23 Sep) with the adhesive in very fine condition.  This cover is a newly discovered rarity and a star item of the British Occupation of Baghdad. Not recorded by Khalastchy (2017), this is just the fourth known cover to India, the third known cover bearing SG 5, and the only known ‘Active Service’ envelope of this type.

1855-58 1d red on blue paper, bright colour with clear to large margins (close at left), lightly used cancelled by part "(DRU)RY / N(EW) ZEALAND" cds which leaves Queen's face clear. An exceptional and beautiful stamp, of great rarity with such a dated cancel ("DEC 6", year uncertain). SG 4 £2500 Ex "Dubois" (Matthew Bennett 23/5/2007, lot 2029 - realised US$3200), with RPSNZ cert (2020).
