E. Whicker, the soldier sending the letter, backstamped 'FPO 13' (5 Sep) & 'SABATHU' arrival (23 Sep) with the adhesive in very fine condition. This cover is a newly discovered rarity and a star item of the British Occupation of Baghdad. Not recorded by Khalastchy (2017), this is just the fourth known cover to India, the third known cover bearing SG 5, and the only known ‘Active Service’ envelope of this type.

1917 (16 Oct) unaddressed 2a on 1pi stationery envelope (Khalastchy Type 3a) bearing 2a on 1pi bright blue (mosque), 2a on 1pi black and violet (Postal Jubilee), 2a on 1pi ultramarine (Old GPO) x2, and 1a on 20pa rose (Old GPO), rather haphazardly applied (some gummed by corner or small part only), each tied by individual strike of type Type 10 'BAGHDAD/ REG' cds, the reverse side blank aside from faint pencil annotations. Splitting along central filing fold and whilst the creasing affecting the envelope has remarkably avoided the adhesives, the same cannot be said for the toning. A rare item despite the condition, this style of cancellation applied to the presentation sets produced towards the end of the occupation. SG 6, 11b, 17x2, 21 (cat £3,000 off cover)
