E. Whicker, the soldier sending the letter, backstamped 'FPO 13' (5 Sep) & 'SABATHU' arrival (23 Sep) with the adhesive in very fine condition. This cover is a newly discovered rarity and a star item of the British Occupation of Baghdad. Not recorded by Khalastchy (2017), this is just the fourth known cover to India, the third known cover bearing SG 5, and the only known ‘Active Service’ envelope of this type.

1917 (1 Sept) ½a on 10pa grey-green, inscription within crescent obliterated, BLOCK OF FOUR fresh large part o.g. (the lower pair unmounted), Upper right stamp with faint diagonal crease and usual minor gum wrinkling, still very fine for this delicate stamp of which just 1012 were issued.
