E. Whicker, the soldier sending the letter, backstamped 'FPO 13' (5 Sep) & 'SABATHU' arrival (23 Sep) with the adhesive in very fine condition. This cover is a newly discovered rarity and a star item of the British Occupation of Baghdad. Not recorded by Khalastchy (2017), this is just the fourth known cover to India, the third known cover bearing SG 5, and the only known ‘Active Service’ envelope of this type.

1898 (3 Oct) 2a red, registered letter postal stationery envelope bearing 1896 First Typeset issue 1a to 8a black, each tied by manuscript ‘DUFILEH’, date and horizontal lines, and British East Africa 1898 1a, 3a, 4a, 4½a, 7½a and 8a all tied by manuscript ‘stamped’ and lines, with additional KAMPALA cds, the reverse bearing Naples transit mark (Dec 98) and London arrival (10 FE 99), the backflap endorsed ‘THE EQUATORIAL PROVINCES EXPEDITION’, sent by the attached doctor, his information recorded at lower left as ‘Gerrard Carre MD/ 27th Baluchis/ Dufileh/ Nile Valley’. &nbsp;A superb cover, one of just five ‘Carre’ covers known from the expedition, with his manuscript cancels also known at Wadelai, Mruli Fort, Massindi and Foweira. Peripheral wear and some faults (which affect all known covers from this correspondence), still a truly superb cover, and the better of the two known ‘Dufileh’ covers, the other (ex Burrus and John Griffiths-Jones) damaged and with a stamp missing.&nbsp;
