1842 cover with 1d red brown plate 23, fine four margin (AG), neatly tied by black MC, from Rennes, France by private ship via Southampton and charged “8” pence in manuscript, for an incoming ship letter, the stamp probably applied by the ship's captain or purser, then by post to Darlington. On reverse Southampton/Ship Letter handstamp (Robertson S11), London transit and Darlington receiving mark “OC.6-7.1842”. Fine and unusual franking.
