POSTAL HISTORY: 1898 stampless envelope to Winchester mounted on loose album leaf, endorsed 'On Active service. No stamps available' and counter-signed by the Commanding Officer of the Lagos N.W. Frontier Force, taxed with black 'T' h/s and marked '2/25' in blue crayon but charged 2½d, the single letter rate. Backstamped by Lagos, Liverpool B.R. Packet and Winchester datestamps on reverse; some wear to reverse, still a fine and scarce item.
