Description
1888 (1 JUN) cover to Stadskanaal, Netherlands, franked with New Republic 2d violet (SG27) and Transvaal 1883 Celliers reissue 1d black (2) and 3d pale red (2), for 10d franking, tied by ‘VRYHEID’ oval ds (type ods 3), showing crisp ‘Jac. DUIVEN’ Postmaster-General's handstamp in violet on reverse alongside Dundee, Durban and London transit cds with part ‘Stadskanaal’ arrival datestamp, sadly incomplete due to small portion of flap missing. Staining affecting 2d adhesive and lower right corner. This cover listed and recorded by Jonkers (pp 221) as one of just FIVE known covers sent overseas, in this case from the Postmaster-General to his Father. A splendid and very rare three-colour franking. SG 27 (NR) and 171, 173 (Transvaal)
