Description
1858 (1 May) entire letter from Port Natal to Edinburgh, bearing small Embossed 3d rose tied by blue "Crown/natal" c.d.s dated "3 MA" and handstruck "6d" showing on reverse ‘Cape Packet’/Devonport' (JY2) London (JY 3) and Edinburgh (JY 4) transit and arrival cds. The complete letter still enclosed and details a disputed payment, as well as an account of early life for the settlers; “We set out on the journey, but in about 20 or 60 miles, were attacked by a band of rebels, and after a conflict some disappeared. Some of the ruffians appear to have been killed.” The author also has also harsh words for the government of the day “I do find that they are incompetent…” A few creases though overall a neat and lovely item with very interesting contents.
