Description
1916 (7 May) 2d black on thin wove, typewritten TOP COPY, unused BLOCK OF EIGHT (4x2) from plate 2, pos. 17-20/21-24, being the bottom two rows of the sheet of 24 (4x6) with side margins, showing the 'ONE PENNY' ERROR OF VALUE (pos. 18) se-tenant with normals. A unique and spectacular multiple, comprising half of the 16 recorded unused examples of the 2d black top copy, the other eight being singles (including one in the Royal Collection), and the finest 2d + 1d se-tenant error in private hands. This was the top copy which produced the three black carbon copies (one of which is in a sheet at the NPM) and two mauve carbon copies, with the others surviving only as pairs or strips of 3. Exceptional condition and among the most desirable of all the great Long Island rarities. Ex 'Mountrobeck' (CRL 1/6/94, lot 118). SG 30/b cat £17,600
