1887 4d grey-black, watermark Crown CA sideways with Crown to right of CA horizontal pair, on part front of a registered cover to Leeds. Tied by large part strikes of the ‘Large football’ obliterator (Barnes 1/89), with neat Crown registered mark, despatch cds AP 16 89 and brown London transit. The front has a tear running from the stamps across to lower left, and has been backed with card to prevent further damage. This is a rare and important item, with only one registered stamped cover to England known prior to UPU; clearly commercial and suggesting that the registration fee was in fact still 4d. SG 10w
