1840 1d Mulready lettersheet, Forme 1 Stereo A11, used to Oulton, near Lowestoft, cancelled by a red MC. London despatch datestamp of MY 8 1840 on reverse. Some creasing, still an attractive early ‘May date' item that opens well for display purposes. SG ME1

The addressee is George Borrow, the novelist and travel writer ('Lavengro' and 'The Romany Rye'), at his recently-married wife's small estate at Oulton. The writer ends his message, 'Pray excuse the Queen's shocking bad paper', a reflection of the poor public perception of the Mulreadys
