Auction: Day 1
Description
1865 envelope to USA franked by 1d brown-purple bisected ½d, and 6d lake, tied in m/s by pencil, addressed to Isaac White, a mining engineer associated with the La Manche mine, Palcentia Bay and it can be assumed that the cover was sent from there. This cover would have been handled as a ‘way letter’ and liable to pay the 6½d rate, from inland to a mainland port, in this case being Boston USA. This cover has attracted much interest and speculation, appearing in previous sales including Sissons in 1957 and SGA Sidney Harris Newfoundland sale in 1968 as lot 179. This cover is mentioned in Robert Pratts' work of 1981 ‘The Pence Issues of Newfoundland’ pp 189, where it is described as known correspondence with possible improper stamps. A curiosity and one which would benefit from certification. possible SG 1a/ SG 20
