Description
1904 Contrary to Regulations Postcards. Fine picture postcard of Plymouth Pier sent from Plymouth to Epsom bearing ½d Dull blue-green (SG 215) tied by a Plymouth '620' duplex for AP.26.1904. Bearing a newspaper clipping alluding to Woolwich Arsenal (Arsenal Football Club) gaining promotion to the English First Division after a 1-1 draw at home against Burslem Port Vale (Port Vale F.C.) the day prior to the mailing on AP.25.1904, charged an additional 1d due to the contrary nature of this postcard. Woolwich Arsenal's promotion was the first time a southern club had been promoted to the top tier of English Football and was described in the clipping as "getting in the magic circle". Some minor toning and creasing nevertheless a wonderful postcard bearing a small piece of English footballing history, ideal for any Arsenal fan.
