Description
Telegraph. 1881 (Aug) -82 2a bright lilac, type T24 opt ("TELEGRAPH" 26x2¾mm in bold type, without stop) of MADRAS on fiscal stamp, left and right halves (reconstructing the complete opt), used with neat part datestamps. Some partly clipped perfs (minor on the left half), otherwise fine and fresh. The rarest basic stamp of the entire Indian Telegraph series, the left half much the finer of two so far recorded, the right half apparently unique, making this a wonderful and unprecedented opportunity. [Hiscocks commented of this stamp: "The printing ... is reported, but no specimens have been observed.", no doubt following Hausburg (p.177) who remarked in 1907 "no specimen is at present known to collectors".]
