Description
1874 (14 Apr) Foreign Bill Revenue, complete set of ELEVEN undenominated MASTER DIE PROOFS for the 1874 Foreign Bill issue in issued colours on glazed card, four attached to the original annotated piece from the De La Rue day book, (241x115mm), the remaining seven neatly cut from the document for display (each 60x92mm). Each proof with handstamped date ‘14 APR 74’ and m/s annotations ‘Submitted to Wm Sargeaunt’ (then Crown Chief Agent), and the proposed face value in the upper right corner, further annotated in pencil next to the portrait with Sargeaunt’s proposed colours for text and value. Each recommendation made was subsequently adopted for the 1874 set, apart from the 1R20, for which Sargeaunt’s colour proposal of ‘o.p Blue or Red’ was changed to the issued green. A spectacular and unique assembly of working proofs, documenting the final stages of the approval process for this attractive and long-running series of revenues. An essential showpiece for any exhibitor. Ex De La Rue archives.
