An Original Pen and Ink Drawing by Barnes Wallis of the workings of the Bouncing Bomb, signed by Barnes Wallis 14th September 1973, and a Black and White Photograph of Barnes Wallis in his garden drawing the diagram. Comprising Sketch in in ink signed Barnes Wallis and dated 14th September 1973, 20cm x 32cm, framed and glazed. Photograph, Black and White 21cm x30cm of Barnes Wallis completing the Drawing. Sir Barnes Neville Wallis CBE FRS RDI FRAeS (26th September 1887 – 30th of October 1979) was an engineer and inventor. He is best known for inventing the ‘Bouncing Bomb’ used by 617 Squadron in Operation Chastise (the ‘Dambusters’ Raid) to attack the dams of the Ruhr Valley on the night of the 16/17th of May 1943.
The raid was the subject of the 1955 film The Dam Busters, in which Wallis was played by Michael Redgrave.
