A Delhi Durbar, Great War, Long and Meritorious Service Medal Group of 5 awarded to Acting Warrant Officer Class 2 Leonard George, 1st Battalion West Riding Regiment, Army Gymnastic Staff and the School of Musketry, comprising 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (6864 A. W.O.Cl. 2L. George. W. Rid. R.), Delhi Durbar Medal 1911, (Sergt Instr. L. George Physical Training Staff), engraved in upright capitals, Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, GVR, (6864 Cpl. L. George. W. Rid. R.), Meritorious Service Medal, GVR, (739 Q.M. Sjt Instr L. George. S. Of. M.) contemporarily mounted for wear, housed in a glazed frame, toned, very fine. (5).
Meritorious Service Medal – London Gazette, 4th of June 1917:
‘For Valuable Services with the Armies in the Field.
Cpl (A/C/S/M.J.R.) L. George. West Riding Regiment Attached Army Gymnastic Staff.’
Leonard George joined the West Riding Regiment on the 25th of November 1901, stating that he was an 18 year old Carman from Lambeth, London and that he was also serving in the Royal Fusiliers Militia. He was just over 5’ 3” tall.
He served Home 25th of November 1901 to the 1st of October 1903, East Indies 2nd of October 1903 to the 14th of March 1916, during which period he was Court Martialled three times, Home 15th of March 1916 to the 29th of March 1916, France 30th of March 1916 to the 21st of October 1918, Home 22nd of October 1918 to the 31st of October 1920, when he was discharged time expired. He was the Inspector of Gymnasium and an Instructor on the Army Gymnastic Staff, transferring to the School of Musketry on the 29th of August 1919.
Sold with a Royal Life Saving Society Medal (L. George. Aug. 1920) and a ‘The Minto Fancy Fete Calcutta 1907’ watch fob, Copy Medal Index Card confirming both Service Numbers and a Pair, Copy British War and Victory Medal Rolls, Copy MSM Card, Copy London Gazette, Copy Delhi Durbar Roll entry and 40 pages of Copy Service Papers.
