Description
A Hill 60, Yorkshire Regiment and Machine Gun Corps, Casualty 1914‑15 Trio awarded to Private John Newton, 6th & 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, 69th Battalion Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), who had fought at Gallipoli and who Died of Wounds in Flanders on the 8th of June 1917 comprising 1914-15 Star, (19420 Pte. J. Newton. York. R.), 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (19420 Pte J. Newton. York. R.), toned, very fine. (3).
Private John Newton joined the Yorkshire Regiment on the 4th of January 1915, a 35 year old Bricklayer by trade. He landed in Gallipoli on the 12th of November 1915, he was posted to the 8th Battalion in France on the 20th of August 1916. He was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and posted to the 69th Battalion (Infantry) on the 17th of December 1916 with Service Number 72687. The 69th Battalion were in action from the 1st to the 9th of June 1917 on Hill 60. Private Newton’s papers state wounded 8th June 1917, Died of Wounds 8th of June 1917. He was Buried at Railway Dugouts near Hill 60.
After the War his Grave could not be located. He is now commemorated by Special Memorial ‘Known to be Buried in This Cemetery’ Plot E Marker 10 at Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), near Ypres, Belgium.
