Description
1898 (Jan) "2½" on 1a6p sepia, type 1 opt with surcharge types 3/4/5 in red, PANE OF SIXTY (6x10, with margin at foot showing part centre guide below R10/6, being the lower left quarter of a sheet), comprising an intact block of 58 and a vertical pair (R3-4/6, positions correct) inserted from another pane, fresh o.g. with most stamps unmounted. The surcharge setting shows types 3 (x26, at R1-2/1-6, R3/1, R4/6, R5/1-6, R6/1, 3-4, and R10/5-6), 4 (x10, at R3/2-6, R4/2-5 and R10/4) and 5 (x24, at R6/2, 5-6, R7-9/1-6 and R10/1-3) se-tenant, while the "Zanzibar" opt is from the final setting 4 (= Hall's setting "A") of Oct 1896, which has small second "z" on all but eight positions, being "normal" on R5/1 (surcharge type 3), R9/4 (type 5), R10/1-4 (type 5 on 1-3, type 4 on 10/4) and R10/6 (type 3), but "tall" on R9/2. [The most distinctive varieties in this setting are "Narrow capital Z" at R1/3 and "Daun's capital Z" at R5/3.] In remarkably fine condition (just minor reinforcements) and a fascinating and wonderful item of the highest importance and rarity, with comprehensive charts detailing both opt and surcharge settings.
