Description
HAWES, Swaledale & Wensleydale Banking Company Limited, PROOF £5.,(1883) no signatures or serial numbers, vignettes either side of Richmond Castle and Bolton castle, (Outing 1786d). Uncirculated but trimmed at bottom and gum marks on rev. where mounted and with pencil annotation, of the highest rarity.
Footnote
An annotation in pencil on the front of the note says “To this - from Hawes 20th. Sept. 1883. NB ‘Richmond’ old plate worn out”. The implication being a new plate was required in 1883 as the old £5plate had worn out and this proof is the first impression from the replacement. Perhaps the bottom of the note was cut short intentionally so that the note could never be used as a £5.
