Montenegro, Siege of Cattaro (Kotor), silver 5 Francs, 1813, (KM 2; Dav. 46, Pag. 292b). In NGC holder graded AU Details – Cleaned (8537336-001). Rare.
A rare example of a crudely produced siege piece from the Siege of Cattaro during Napoleonic Wars. After Austria declared war on France in August of 1813, the British Royal Navy which controlled the Adriatic joined forces with the Austrian armies invading France's Illyrian Provinces. On the evening of 14th of October, the British Royal Navy began to position ships and men for a siege of the fortified town of Cattaro, now Kotor in Montenegro. The main fortress of Cattaro was surrounded by British, Montenegrin, Croat and Sicilian forces. The siege lasted until January 1814 and ended with French capitulation.
