Description
VOCE POPULI, laureate bust right, Rev. HIBERNIA, Hibernia seated, with six-stringed harp, holding flower, 3.39g/5h. (Breen 234; Nelson 1). Very Fine for issue, a pleasing example with attractive chocolate tone. Dig to neck. Much scarcer than the Voce Populi halfpennies.

Minted in response to the lack of small coinage in Ireland, the Voce Populi halfpennies and farthings found their way over to America and were in general circulation until the American Revolutionary War. They are believed to have been first minted by a Mr. Roche of Dublin, a button maker who died in 1760. After his death it is assumed that numerous other persons continued to produce these coins, until new Royal issues finally arrived in Ireland in 1762.
