This is followed by an exceptional group of approximately 150 19th-century copper tokens from the celebrated Francis Gissing Collection. Many of these pieces were originally acquired through Baldwin’s some 40 to 60 years ago and are largely ex-Cokayne, presented here in superb condition throughout.  Also featured is a fascinating collection of around 200 English pub checks, dating from the 1850s to the 1890s, offering a unique glimpse into social history.  In addition, the sale will include approximately 70 lots of miscellaneous 18th-century tokens from various other vendors, to be found throughout the auction.

Wright Davis, W.J., and Waters, A.W., Tickets and Passes of Great Britain and Ireland , Leamington Spa, 1922, viii + 347pp + index, 2 plates, copy no.58, signed by Arthur Waters. principally relating to theatre tickets and colliery checks, an essential reference. Original cloth, spine internally a trifle shaky and adrift from the main corpus, first four pages loos, otherwise complete.
Possibly ex Hull Museum copy – accompanying the book is a letter from the director of Hull Museums, T Sheppard, to Davis asking him for a medal that Davis had recently had struck, for the museum collection.
