Description
An Original Monthly Army List Dated March 1799. Two Boer War Christmas Cards To “Mother” Made from Tea Leaves from Tabel Mountain containing post cards of the Battles of Elandslaagte and Paarderberg. Envelope Dated 1880 sent From H.M.S. Decoy, A portrait Photograph of Lord Kitchener, Three Letters from Sub-Conductor Joseph Eames of Frogmill Gloucestershire. It appears that he had been in India since about 1815 as a soldier. Service (presumably) with the Bengal Horse Artillery, probably transferred to the East India Company from a King’s Regiment. He married a native girl in 1826. His excuse for not writing home was uncertainty of address added that his letters would be perused by Regimental Office Staff as all frontier letters had to be unsealed . Once he reached Warrant Rank his mail was sealed before franking. His pay was 62 rupees per month (1 rupee 2/6d) = £92/ year at Indian Rates but only £76-9-4d at English Rate. His service was up to 30th May 1880 but this would not have entitled him to a pension so he signed on again for another v3 t=years which gave him a pension of £45/year. His last letter of July 1830 describes how he has been crippled with worms in his legs “from 18” – 30” or 40 inches long” Fair (A Lot)
