Description
The India General Service Medal, 1854-95, awarded to Private John Baker, 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment comprising Indian General Service Medal, 1854-95, one clasp, Burma 1887-89, (984 Pte J. Baker 2d Bn. Ches. R.) engraved in running script, toned fine. (1)
John Baker was born in Runcorn a 21 year old Plasterer when he joined The Cheshire Regiment on the 10th of January 1884, he Served overseas with the 2nd Battalion in the Mediterranean, India and Burma, being awarded the India General Service Medal with clasp Burma 1887-89, he was Discharged on the 9th of January 1896. He, however, rejoined the Army on the 21st of September 1914 joining the 6th Battalion Manchester Regiment being posted to the Royal Defence Corps 325 Company on the 29th of July 1916 serving with various Companies until the 6th of April 1918always serving Home until he was Demobilised on the 12th of February 1919. He Died on the 23rd of January 1940 in Withington, Manchester aged 75.
