Description
Newton, John Webb (wool trade ?) Halfpenny 1796, Woolpack, rev. Crest and arms in an oaken wreath, edge plain, 30mm/14.67gm. (DH 317), good Extremely Fine, even toning with some original lustre, very rare ‘RR’.
Ex. ‘an old Surrey Col.’ via Mark Rasmussen Sep. 2016.
Conder’s and D&W’s location of Newton to Warwickshire is questionable. Newton in Powys is a strong possibility but so far no ‘Webb’ in the woollen industry has been identified there. This piece certainly has the look of a private token and the dies were engraved by John Jorden, Westwood’s apprentice – the dies broke after some 48 pieces had been struck and ‘the order was never completed’.
