Description
Birmingham, Kempson’s Halfpenny 1797, Boy standing holding an auger and spanner, rev. hedgehog crest and arms, edge CURRENT EVERYWHERE, 28.5mm/10.20gm. (DH 50). Another the same but gilt proof, 29.5mm/9.82gm. (DH 50), another the same but Irish edge - PAYABLE IAT CLOUGHER OR IN DUBLIN, (DH 50a), all good Extremely Fine, first with considerable amounts of original lustre, second with lustrous gilt although minor flan flaw on obv. edge at 3 o’ clock, third toned with some iridescence. Gilt piece extremely rare ‘RRR’. [3]
All three ex F S Cokayne Col., his tickets, DH 50 bought 19 Sep 1895 for 1/6.; DH 50gilt ex Burra Col. via Sotheby’s 8 Oct 1919 for 19/-, lot 30 with 9 other pieces. Acquired AHB c. 1946.
