The Great War Memorial Plaque awarded to Private Edward Thorpe, 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards who Died of Wounds on the 10th of January 1915, Comprising, Memorial Plaque (Edward Thorpe), very fine (1)
Edward Thorpe Enlisted Nottingham on the 3rd Feb 1912, a farm servant by trade. He landed in France on the 22nd of August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion. He Died of Wounds on the 10th of January 1915 the War Diary sates that the Battalion had moved back to Calonne on the day he succumbs to wounds. On 7th they'd moved from Riez Bailleul back to Calonne, it is probable therefore that he must have been wounded on or before 7th Jan to be buried at Richebourg, probably on 3rd or 4th looking at the diary which states 1 man Killed 1 Wounded on the 2nd; 1 man Killed 1 Wounded on the 3rd; 2 Wounded on the 4th; and 1 wounded and 1 lightly wounded on the 6th. He was the the 8th person to be buried in Richebourg-L’Avoue cemetery which was begun January 1915.
Edward was the Son of Charles F. and Harriet Thorpe of Oldcoates. Rotherham. He is Buried in Plot 1 Row A Grave 8 of the Rue-Des-Berceaux Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L’Avoue, he was 21 years old.
