Description
The Victory Medal awarded to Lieutenant James Gordon Mein, South Lancashire Regiment and Royal Engineers comprising, 1914-191 Victory Medal, (Lieut. J.G. Mein), fair (1)
James Gordon Mein , A Derbyshire mining engineer like his father was Commissioned mid-War and was posted to the Royal Engineers so he's probably an officer of one of the Tunnelling Companies – there is a set of Officer's Papers at The National Archives.
He's much in the papers, though. In 1908 while a mining student, he knocked down a lady while riding his bicycle and she died. In 1925, a homeless man stole his fox terrier, "worth £3 10s". In 1927, he was fined and his licence suspended for 12 months for drunk driving, and in 1937 there was a fatal explosion at the mine he ran.
By 1939, he's a colliery manager in Belper.
In 1942, he is passing by when he sees a little boy drowning and wades in to save him.
But he ends up dying in South Africa 1964.
Worthy of further Great War Research. Sold with Copy Medal Index Card and Medal Roll, Copy Newspaper articles, Genealogical and Probate information.
