The 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals awarded to 2nd Lieutenant Claude Rainsford Ashton, Hampshire Regiment late, 5444 Corporal Honourable Artillery Company Comprising, 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (2.Lieut. C.F. Ashton),contemporarily Mounted For Wear, in wrong order, lightly toned very fine (2)
Claude Rainsford Ashton, a unique name, landed in France as a Corporal with the H.A.C. on the 21st of July 1916 serving in France until the 7th of June 1918 Commissioned 5th Feb 1919 into the Hampshire Regiment having. He had previously served in the Royal Marines from 1908 and purchased his discharge in 1910, TNA File ADM 157/3111/38 refers but this is not, as yet, digitised. The catalogue description says:
Claude Rainford Ashton, born: Beeston, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire; Age at attestation: 18; Attested: Nottingham; Joined in: 1908; Discharge reason: By purchase; Discharge year: 1910 .
No Officer's file at TNA, so either it was destroyed in 1940 or he stayed in after 1922 and the MoD still holds them.
