Description
Victoria (1837-1901), Penny, 1854, ‘Overstruck with dies for unidentified Coin, Token or Medal.’ Colon after DEF, young head left, reverse Britannia seated right, ornamental trident, (S3948, BMC 1507). About extremely fine with overstriking.
Footnote
Here we have a rare and extremely unusual Victorian copper penny dated 1854. It has been through the striking process a couple
of times, fi rstly struck as a currency penny.
Secondly, either purposely to test striking pressures/die impression, or erroneously being mixed in with blanks for the production of another Coin, Token or Medal. Examples of such are two 1866 Italian 10 Centesimi found in 2004 and 2006 receptively
(The British Bronze Penny – page 98, M Gouby)
We know through records that during the period 1853 up to and including 1856, Copper coinage was in some part contracted
out to Heaton Mint.
Heaton Mint at that time also Minted Coinage, Tokens and produced blanks to export to other Mints worldwide.

A fascinating piece of research to be completed by the buyer.
