Description
Sicily, Syracuse, time of Dionysios I (405-370 BC) AR Dekadrachm, unsigned dies in the style of Euainetos, c. 405-400 BC, 40.19g. Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving fast quadriga left, Nike above, flying right, crowning charioteer with wreath, shield, greaves, Attic helmet and cuirass below. Rev. [Σ-Y-PA-K-OΣ-IΩN] Head of Arethusa facing left, wearing a wreath of grain ears, necklace of pearls and triple‑pendant earring, scallop shell behind neck, four dolphins around. (Gallatin F.IV/R. XIV(?); HGC 2, 1299; SNG ANS 373; Dewing 910). Very Fine. Portrait of very pleasing style. Some light smoothing to the reverse fi elds. Pleasing grey/purple toning.
