Description
Brutus (Late Summer-Autumn, 44 BC) Fourrée (contemporary copy) Denarius, mint moving with Brutus in Northern Greece, L. Plaetorius Cestianus, magistrate, 2.92g. BRVT / IMP, L•PLAET•CEST, bare head of Brutus right. Rev. EID•MAR, pileus between two daggers. (Crawford 508/3; CRI 216; RSC 15). Some breaks to the silver plating, but attractive and stable. A couple of scratches, otherwise Good Very Fine. Extremely Rare.
This plated ‘Eid Mar’ denarius offers an affordable means of acquiring an example of the most famous Roman coin type. The ‘Eid Mar’ issue is one of the most important ancient coins; extremely rare artefacts from antiquity which directly reference the assassination of Julius Caesar – one of the most important and famous events in history.
The overall quality of production is high, with a thick layer of silver plating. This has broken at the highest points of the piece, revealing the copper-alloy core beneath. This metal is stable and not unattractive.
