Description
Ayyubid of Yemen, al-Mu'azzam Turan Shah (AH 569-577 / 1173-1181 AD), gold Dinar, AH 573 / 1177/8 AD, ‘Adan, 2.30g (A. A1087; Balog 927). Extremely Fine. Flan slightly split near the edge in one area. This is an extremely rare piece and in exceptional condition for the issue.

Al-Mu'azzam Turan Shah was the older brother of Saladin, the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. In AH 569 / 1174 AD, Saladin sent his brother on a campaign to Yemen to bring down a heretical leader, in the course of which Turan Shah conquered Zabid, 'Adan and San'a. He left Yemen in AH 571 / 1176 AD to become his brother's governor of Syria and was replaced as Emir of Yemen.
