Description
Arab-Sasanian, al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf (AH 75-95 / 694-713 AD), silver Drachm, AH 81 / 700/1 AD, BYŠ (Bishapur), 3.47g (Malek 352). Very Fine. Some peripheral corrosion. Rare.
Between AH 80 and 84, the rebel governor 'Abd al-Rahman b. Muhammad had coins struck in the region. Album states that no coins were struck by al-Hajjaj after AH 81, but Malek has Drachms recorded for years AH 82 and 83; without the additional inscription on the border HShT. This coin, dated AH 81, shows the letters HShT (in Pahlavi) on the border of the obverse. This rare variety was interpreted by Gaube as 'eight' potentially referring to the eighth year of al-Hajjaj's appointment.
